Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead
The great poet Alfred Lord Tennyson who was born in the year 1802 in England. He was eccentric in his nature. But his poems deal with the human psychology on love and affection. Though he died in the year 1892 his poems have brought him high reputation even today.
The poem which I am going to explain now is one such emotional poem. The poet deals with the mind pattern of the wife who faces the death of her warrior husband. She never speaks a word and sheds no tears. Her mind is worried and she is about to take a decision not to live any more. But tears come out when she looks to her innocent child who needs to be brought up and thus she decides to live.
PARA 1.
The lady is not disturbed when her warrior husband is brought home dead. In fact the lady was very upset and was thinking that living without her husband is of no use. The servants understood the mind of the lady and wanted the lady should cry and shouldn't suppress her sufferings, else that may lead to catastrophe. i.e., disaster in lady's family)
PARA 2
All praise the dead warrior and call him as soft, naive and a lovable person even by his enemies. But the lady maintains her silence and she is not moved by the the reaction of the people.
PARA 3
In order to make the lady cry one servant (maid) takes out the covered cloth put on the dead husband. The maid thought that the lady would cry by seeing the face of her dead husband. Even then the lady remains speechless.
PARA 4
Finally the ninety year old woman brings the child of the warrior and keeps the child upon the lady's knees. The lady bursts into tears and says that she should live for the sake of her child.
TO SUM UP
One should remember that birth and death are part of the human life. It is true that one feels the pinch of the death of the nearest and dearest, yet what is required is that one should also remember the responsibility of looking after his or her children who need care, love and affection from the parent. The instant poem is an excellent example dealing in this direction.
My post script:
This is really a nice poem and it was good that Chaitra asked me to send her a detailed explanation. I got an opportunity. There are sure to be ups and downs in one's life. The challenge is how we face the sad moments/incidents and continue in our life.
Anyway, on a lighter note Chaitra says in her email that this poem is a very easy one 😀😃 Got it? simply simple- when she says it's very easy why should I come into picture.
