ENGLISH AS A MEDIUM OF COMMUNICATION
Today I wish to speak on the subject "Importance of English as a medium of communication".
Communication has assumed significance in the present era of globalisation. World being vast, population always growing, there arises the need for communication. People, living in various countries, have come closer, mainly due to the fast growth, in communication channel.
People in various nations, have their own languages, to communicate with one another. For example, people in France speak French. In Germany, people communicate with each other, through German. India has various languages, in different States. Again, each State has, two or three languages of its own.
It would be a herculean task, for a person in one State or Country, to have contacts, with other States or Nations, if there is, no common language to communicate. Thanks to the British, for giving the world, a beautiful and simple language. That is English. Whatever may be, the intentions of the British, to have political control, of various Nations across the world, they should be thanked, for encouraging their language, English, wherever they ruled. But these Nations though, did not welcome a foreign language, are now able to have communications, all over the world. Our Nation is not an exception to this.
Nations have got freedom, British rulers went back to England, But the language of English, was given as a gift to these nations. British apart from ruling many Countries in Asia and Africa, have also migrated to America and Australia. Thus we see, in all the continents, English is used as the a main medium of communication.
Today Information Technology has assumed utmost importance. The main language used in IT industry is English. Today India is the pioneer nation, in Information Technology, mainly due to the fact, that English has been used.
Look at China. China has become a very strong nation today. But yet China is facing acute problem of communication, with other nations. The reason is lack of English usage in that Country. China has realised this, and now Chinese Government, is promoting English in the Country, in order to capture Information Technology business, all over the world.
This is just one of the examples I have given, in order to highlight, the importance of English, as a medium of communication.
There are only 26 letters in English. When you compare with other languages, it is very easy to learn. Look at our own regional languages. It is difficult to learn as the alphabets are more than double in number, apart from other complications in making sentences.
We are living in the communication era. On account of industrial revolution, goods are manufactured in large quantities by machines. This results in intensive marketing of products. Transportation helps for movement of products. But without proper communication, these products, would not have been sold or purchased. Hence, the need for, a common medium of communication in the world. No other language, except English will fulfil the communication gap. Almost all the nations, have adopted English.
That is why we see, though the world is vast, it has become small. Thanks to English being the medium of communication. Long live English language.
I am sure by now you might have been convinced about the importance of having knowledge of English in one's life. Now the question arises, as to how this simple language, is to be popularised in the world ?
Let us now, look at the existing present system of education. Governments in Russia, China, East European nations, have not made study of English as compulsory but it is made optional. That is why many people in these nations, are still averse towards English. The reason might be that, the Governments donot like to accept the reality and also the importance of English in Communication. People of these nations, have already realised now, and are giving encouragement, to learn English in schools. China is a classic example.
Now let us examine the scenario in our country. In most of the States, learning English is compulsory, right from fifth standard. In some states like Bihar, learning English starts from eighth standard. Yet, education in Rural India is pathetic. The percentage of illiteracy is high, leave alone learning English.
The Central Government has taken initiation, for ensuring free education upto X standard. But, there is a strong need for effective teaching personnel, specially in English subject, in Rural India.
Let us now examine the question, why English knowledge is a must ?
When we look at subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Commerce or Medicine, the origination of study has come from England and America. Many books are written in English, incorporating new technical words. These technical words are accepted globally, in most of the countries. New theory, new technical or scientific words of English, are more commonly used by the public at large. Difficulty arises for correct translation of these words, to various languages and the student find it difficult to remember these technical words in any other language, other than English.
Hence I strongly feel that, the technical subjects such as Science, Engineering, Accountancy and Medicine should only be taught or learnt in English because of its simplicity to learn in English. This would not only help wide usage of English apart from exchange of thoughts at international levels.
We are living in the communication era. On account of industrial revolution, goods are manufactured in large quantities by machines. This results in intensive marketing of products. Transportation helps the movement of products from one place to another. But without proper communication, the products are difficult to be sold or purchased. Hence, the need for, a common medium of communication in the world. No other language, except English will fulfill the communication gap. Almost all the nations, have adopted English.
That is why we see, though the world is vast, it has become small. Thanks to English being the medium of communication. Long live English language.
